Monthly Salary Credit (MSC) Calculation

About SSS Sickness Benefit
What is SSS Sickness Benefit?
Sickness benefit is a daily cash allowance paid by the Social Security System (SSS) for the number of days a member is unable to work due to sickness or injury.
Who Can Qualify?
An employed member is qualified to avail of this benefit if he/she:
- Is unable to work due to sickness or injury and is confined for at least four (4) days
- Has paid at least three (3) months of contributions within the 12-month period preceding the semester of sickness
- Has notified the employer regarding the sickness or injury according to SSS rules
- Has used up all current company sick leave with pay for the current year
How is the Benefit Calculated?
- The Sickness Benefit is a daily cash allowance equivalent to 90% of the member's Average Daily Salary Credit (ADSC)
- ADSC = Sum of the six (6) highest MSCs / 180 days
- Daily Sickness Allowance = ADSC x 90%
- Total Benefit = Daily Sickness Allowance x Approved number of days
Limitations:
- Maximum of 120 days per calendar year
- Maximum of 240 days on account of the same illness (beyond this, it becomes a disability claim)
Sickness Notification & Claim Filing
Notification Deadlines:
Home Confinement:
- Employee to Employer: Within 5 calendar days after start of confinement
- Employer to SSS: Within 5 calendar days from receiving notification
Hospital Confinement:
- Employer to SSS: Within 1 year from date of hospital discharge
Implications of Late Filing:
Failure to observe notification rules can lead to reduction or denial of the sickness claim. If notification is late, SSS may deem the confinement to have started no earlier than the 5th day preceding the date of SSS notification.
